Understanding reprocessing technologies and collection systems for plastic films

Investigation into the existing film reprocessing market in the UK, potential developments in film reprocessing technology, and how European collection schemes deal with plastic film.

Large quantities of plastic films are used and disposed of in the UK every year. The reprocessing of waste films can be technically challenging with limited end markets for recycled material.

This study investigated reprocessing technologies used by UK film reprocessors, including existing capacities. It also highlighted promising technologies for film recycling currently adopted by other countries but with potential to be implemented in the UK. Finally, the study reviewed existing household plastic film collection schemes across Europe in comparison to the UK.

It will serve to inform development of future plastic film collection, which will be required in order to reach current packaging targets.
