Near Infrared (NIR) good practice guidance, case study and report

Guidance for existing and potential recyclers of household plastic packaging waste is now available to help you to improve recovery rates and quality of materials from your NIR sorting facility.

NIR spectroscopy is an optical sorting technology used widely in plastic recycling to enable plastic packaging and other plastic wastes to be separated by polymer type. This enables the production of high quality materials which can substitute for virgin polymers in the manufacture of new items.

WRAP has produced good practice guidance including a case study and report to help plastic recyclers such as MRF operators, PRF operators and reprocessors to improve their commercial viability and ensure as much as possible of this valuable resource is recycled.
