The current highlights and trends are:


Aluminium & Steel

Aluminium can prices saw strong gains towards to end of year and reached an 11 year high of £1,065 per tonne in December 17. 

Steel can prices declined slightly to £128 per tonne at the end of December. 

Mixed can prices continued to trade at around £110 per tonne, their highest price since July 2015. 


PRN prices

Aluminium PRN prices remained at £9 per tonne in November 2017, down £2 per tonne on the same period last year. 

Steel PRN prices declined slightly to £4.50 per tonne in November 2017, down £2 per tonne on prices seen 12 months ago. 


Packaging recovery & recycling

Around 23kt of aluminium packaging was reprocessed in the UK or exported in 2017Q3, up 1kt from 2016Q3. 

The amount of recovered steel packaging that is being reprocessed or exported totalled 95kt in 2017Q3. This was a decrease of 1kt from 2016Q3.


Non-ferrous scrap metal

Copper dry bright wire prices made strong gains in 2017 although they dropped slightly in the last few weeks of the year. They are currently trading around £4,525 per tonne.

The price of aluminium pure cuttings also declined slightly to £800 per tonne.

18/8 stainless solid prices dropped slightly in the last few weeks of the year and currently stand at £700 per tonne. Lead battery prices also saw a slightly decrease to £538  per tonne in December 2017. They previously peaked at £600 per tonne in November 2016. 


Ferrous scrap metal prices

Prices for ferrous metal grades have seen strong gains in 2017. In October 2017 prices averaged around £1305 per tonne for OA Heavy grade, £137 per tonne for 4C grade, £76 per tonne for 7B grade and £97 per tonne for grade 10.  


Aluminium 

Virgin aluminium prices rose substantially throughout 2016 and 2017. November prices currently stand at around £1580 per tonne, a decrease of around £14 per tonne on the previous month. The average price over the past 12 months was £1,504 per tonne.
