Introduction

This section of the data portal provides a summary of developments in the UK’s recovered metals market.  The data presented here comes from respected, publicly available and regularly updated sources on the internet.  By following the link(s) above the graphics, you can find out more details on the source of the data and visit the sites to access the full data.

The current highlights and trends are:


Aluminium & Steel

Aluminium can prices saw strong gains towards to end of year and were trading at  £1,028 per tonne in February 2018. 

Steel can prices remained at £128 per tonne. . 

Mixed can prices declined slightly to £93 per tonne. This is the first price drop in 6 months. 


PRN prices

Aluminium PRN prices remained at £9.75 per tonne in January 2018, only 25 pence less than prices per tonne on the same period last year. 

Steel PRN prices improved slightly to £5.50 per tonne in January 2018. However, this is £3.50 per tonne down on prices seen 12 months ago. 


Packaging recovery & recycling

Around 23kt of aluminium packaging was reprocessed in the UK or exported in 2017Q3, up 1kt from 2016Q3. 

The amount of recovered steel packaging that is being reprocessed or exported totalled 95kt in 2017Q3. This was a decrease of 1kt from 2016Q3.


Non-ferrous scrap metal

Copper dry bright wire prices returned to their previous buoyancy and are currently trading around £4,475 per tonne.

The price of aluminium pure cuttings improved in 2018 and they are currently trading at £925 per tonne.

18/8 stainless solid prices continued to rise in 2018 and are currently trading at £745 per tonne. tonne. Lead battery prices remain strong at around 575 per tonne..They previously peaked at £600 per tonne in November 2016. 


Ferrous scrap metal prices

Prices for ferrous metal grades continued to perform well.  In February 2018 prices averaged around £170 per tonne for OA Heavy grade, £140 per tonne for 4C grade, £85 per tonne for 7B grade and £115 per tonne for grade 10.  


Aluminium 

Virgin aluminium prices rose substantially throughout 2017. February 2018 prices currently stand at around £1580 per tonne, an increase of around £77 per tonne on the previous month. The average price over the past 12 months was £1,537 per tonne.
