Fate of persistent herbicides in anaerobic digestion (OMK002)

Closing date:

Following previous desk based studies suggesting that some herbicides might be able to resist degradation in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, WRAP would like to procure a contractor to undertake laboratory research into the fate of these herbicides in AD.

A qualitative risk assessment carried out on behalf of WRAP concluded that, for the majority of herbicides considered, there was no or only low risk of herbicide transfer via anaerobic digestion (AD) to sensitive crops.
The research also noted that a few specific compounds may not degrade (or only degrade very slowly) during AD, although there is no data to confirm this.  Whilst not presenting a subsequent risk to human or animal health, any remaining herbicide residues could impact on crop health and productivity if applied to a sensitive crop and if applied at sufficient concentration.

WRAP would like to procure a contractor to undertake laboratory research into the fate of these compounds in AD.
