Collection of recyclable materials - household batteries

The EU batteries directive became UK law in 2010. It is now the legal responsibility of battery producers to fund battery collection schemes.

The Directive requires that 25% by weight of portable (household) batteries placed on the market each year are collected for recycling by 2012, rising to 45% in 2016.

WRAP was commissioned by Defra and the Devolved Administrations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to run a series of trials to gain an understanding of the most cost efficient and effective ways to collect portable batteries in line with the targets set by the Directive.

Five different collection methods were trialled:

  • kerbside;
  • community drop-off (libraries/council offices);
  • retail drop-off;
  • postal; and
  • NHS and Fire-service (in regular contact with members of the public with portable batteries to dispose of).

The trials ran from April 2005 to March 2008 and a report of the findings is available.
