About WRAP Cymru

WRAP helps individuals, businesses and local authorities to reduce waste and recycle more, making better use of resources and helping to tackle climate change.

Established as a not-for-profit company in 2000, WRAP is backed by government funding from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Targetting zero waste

In recent years, Wales has made substantial progress in reducing and recycling the waste it produces, and has now set a target to achieve zero waste by 2050.

WRAP Cymru has an important role to play in achieving this goal, working with partners and businesses across the whole resource efficiency loop to make reducing waste and recycling even easier and more effective.

Integrated approach

Our work is structured around an integrated approach promoting waste prevention, recycling and the use of recycled materials. But as well as keeping the amount of waste we produce to a minimum, we also aim to encourage businesses and individuals in Wales to reuse or recycle any unavoidable waste. And by ensuring sufficient capacity in the recycling and reprocessing sector, we can allow this waste to be turned into valuable products, which will ultimately reduce the pressure on natural resources.

What does WRAP Cymru do?

WRAP Cymru works in partnership with businesses to encourage more efficient use of materials and increase recycling. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.

Thanks to funding awarded by The Welsh Assembly Government funding, WRAP Cymru has become a major player in Environmental Business Support in Wales, being a key partner in the emerging Flexible Support for Business Environment and Sustainability network.

What has WRAP Cymru achieved

Since WRAP Cymru was established in 2007, we have delivered over £500,000 of capital grant funding to help establish and grow recycling businesses, saved the Welsh construction industry £1.3 million through waste minimisation and supported three new anaerobic digestion facilities, which are projected to divert over 300,000 tonnes of waste from landfill over the next five years.

There is particular emphasis on facilitating the development of strategic reprocessing infrastructure in Wales. To that end WRAP Cymru has developed a more flexible Capital Competition mechanism which offers opportunities to applicants twice a year, targeting a number of different Commercial & Industrial waste streams identified as priorities by the Welsh Assembly Government. We have also developed a suite of innovative support products which complement the existing UK programmes while being specific to Wales, and offer funding opportunities twice a year.

We are very proud of what we have achieved so far but we know that we cannot deliver our vision alone. Much of what has been achieved is down to our strategic partners, not least the continued support of the Welsh Assembly Government, and as we look to the future, we hope to work with our stakeholders to create an even more resource efficient Wales
